Yes Size Matters (Sometimes)

When it comes to challenge coins, size definitely gets noticed.
In Australia, the sweet spot for most custom challenge coins sits around the 45–50mm mark. It’s the size most people naturally gravitate toward — large enough to feel substantial in the hand, detailed enough to showcase good artwork, but still practical to carry, display, or present.
That said, there are times when bigger really does make a bigger impact.
Oversized coins in the 60–75mm range can completely change the feel of a piece. They command attention. They allow for more intricate detail, deeper relief, stronger visual storytelling, and a more premium presentation. When someone picks up a larger coin, it instantly feels more significant — less like a token and more like an award, commemorative piece, or centrepiece display item.
Of course, there’s a catch.
Larger coins generally come with larger production costs. More metal, larger moulds, increased enamel fill, heavier plating, and more complex manufacturing all contribute to the final price tag. In challenge coin manufacturing, size is usually directly tied to cost.
But sometimes it’s worth every cent.
A major operational deployment. A retirement presentation. A unit anniversary. A once-in-a-career achievement. These are the moments where going bigger can elevate a coin from “nice” to unforgettable.
Because while size isn’t everything… sometimes the right size says everything without a single word.
